Opera Gallery Paris is hosting a group show titled “American Icons” centered on postwar artworks taking place in the French capital.The group exhibition is focused on the creations of the post-war period by a number of artists from Europe, Asia and elsewhere who have all migrated to the United States in search of their freedom of creation. The exhibition showcases sketches, drawings and unusual works of artists who have achieved a position of accomplishment to the audience and the art connoisseurs and who have a long history of association with the gallery.This exhibition features artists belonging to different generations such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mel Bochner, Alexander Calder, George Condo, Samuel Francis, Keith Haring, Robert Indiana, Jeff Koons, Sol LeWitt, Robert Longo, Marc Sijan, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, and Kehinde Wiley.Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1960. Basquiat used different sources like anatomy manuals, newspapers, comic strips, album covers and wrote words and fragmented sentences after which he covered them with graffiti. Basquiat’s work is included in many museum collections all over the world.One of the leading figures in the development of Conceptual Art in 1960s and 1970s New York, Mel Bochner, was born in Pittsburgh, US, in 1940. He was a pioneer in introduction of the use of written language within the visual image.Alexander Calder was born in Philadelphia in 1898. He was originator of the ‘mobiles’: suspended or standing kinetic sculpture. His works are held in almost every major museum collection worldwide.George Condo was born in Concord, US, in 1957. He lives and works in New York. He is famous for hybrid-style paintings. His works feature in important public and private collections in Europe and the US.
