Annandale Galleries is currently hosting a group exhibition titled "Vintage Maningrida: vintage bark paintings".The exhibition presents a collection of vintage bark paintings by various artists such as John Bulunbulun, Mick Kabarkku, Kay Lindjuwanga, John Mawurndjul and others.John Bulunbulun lived with his wife’s family at Wurdeja, not far from the Blyth River in the Northern Territory. He was a member of the Ganalbingu clan, and one of the most important singers and ceremonial men in the northern part of central Arnhem Land. Bulunbulun painted continuously since 1970, having his first solo exhibition at the Hogarth Galleries, Sydney in 1981. He received considerable publicity in 1989 when he took successful action against a Queensland T-shirt maker for illegally reproducing one of his works, a landmark case in Aboriginal intellectual property rights.Mick Kubarkku is recognised as being one of the great Kunwinjku artists. He was born c.1922 at Kukabarnka, the large Marrinj clan wetland area near the Liverpool River of Western Arnhem Land. Having spent his youth largely oblivious to a European presence, he was one of the few who remembered the old men who painted the caves there, and could give detailed interpretations of their content.Kay Lindjuwanga is a Kuninjku artist born in 1956.  Lindjuwanga is the daughter of renowned painter Peter Marralwanga. She was taught to paint by her husband and acclaimed artist, John Mawurndjul. Lindjuwanga has often assisted Mawurndjul with his painting. In the early 1990’s, she was  among the first Kuninjku women to paint on bark.John Mawurndjul  is an Australian contemporary Indigenous artist. Mawurndjul's artwork is highly regarded internationally. He uses traditional motifs in innovative ways to express spiritual and cultural values. He is a member of the Kuninjku people of West Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, and grew up with only occasional contact with non-indigenous people and culture. He is currently living a traditional lifestyle at an outstation near Maningrida which includes hunting and a continuation of his paintings.Annandale Galleries opened in 1991 in a former Methodist Church built in 1860 that became a Masonic Hall in 1920. Their recent exhibitions have included a range of leading national and international artists. The exhibition will be on view through June 16, 2018 at Annandale Galleries, 110 Trafalgar St, Annandale NSW 2038, Australia.
