Joseph Gross Gallery, New York, will host an exhibition titled 'Cecil: A Love Story' from October 6-29, 2016.On August 15, 2015, the world woke up with rage against the killing of Cecil the lion by trophy hunter American dentist Walter Palmer. It took the social mesia by storm. The exhibition, 'Cecil: A Love Story' examines the public’s erratic moral compass through the guise of perceived aesthetic value in the animal kingdom. This multi-media exhibition scrutinizes the inconsistencies in the public’s emotion and love towards certain creatures in animal kingdom based on their perceived idea of “beauty”. Through various media, New York based artist Joseph Grazi creates a dialogue based on how people regard and process atrocities against creatures deemed “beautiful” versus the “ugly”; like why the world feels the pain in killing of a superior beauty of a lion, but stay apathetic in the same fate for a pig or chicken? At the same time, the artist brings a different perspective on conservation and trophy hunting in the context of “the wild”. The artist argues highlighting the economic struggle in Cecil’s native Zimbabwe, citing that few people from that land wish for abolition of trophy hunting as it brings millions of dollars to the country’s economy along with creating jobs. Through this exhibition, Grazi points out the irony regarding perception on value of life and economy in the mindset of the privileged social media activists. The exhibition will be on view at Joseph Gross Gallery, 548 West 28th Street, New York, NY 10001, United States.
