Leeahn Gallery, Seoul, is hosting Seungjoo Kim’s solo exhibition titled “On the Line.”Kim’s installation pieces are largely based on sturdy materials like steel or aluminum, which contradicts the curved forms akin to tape measures. The gentle curved lines might remind viewers of softness, weakness and meekness associated with femininity, while in practice, those curved forms made from highly challenging and cumbersome materials that are not compatible with the feminine qualities but coexistent with tough masculine attributes. Also, Kim often uses black and yellow, both of which imply clarity, presumably to counterbalance the accidentality and unclarity of the forms she creates.Noting the unbending lines of rulers, and the ruler-specific formative attributes like inches marks, Kim attributes to rulers not the ability to draw straight lines or precisely measuring lengths, but a new ontological value as an assuming pure forms. The recurring regular inches marks constitutes a pattern, while the rulers are illogically enlarged or represented as curved lines, creating relationships with the contexts within the space where the rulers are installed. Kim’s rulers used to stick to the unyielding straight lines, with the curved lines first tried in her 2015 solo exhibition limited to a passive experiment, the curved lines of the three-dimensional forms are derived from the curved lines as the title implies. Kim’s “On the Line” series consists of three over-sized pieces installed on the floor. Also, the wall installation series comprises two 2D pieces and three seemingly 3D relief pieces.2D curved lines could embody the 3D qualities of the enlarged rulers Kim draws upon such methodologies as “accidentality,” “incidentality” or “ambiguity.” With the curved lines generated by dint of unplanned and informal accidentality, Kim intends to unroll in 3D space with a painting-like aspect comparable to dynamic and lively 2D drawings through inadvertent strokes. Each “Line” series presents a 3D piece with zigzag patterns unfolding in four directions, showing some regularity at first glance far from the accidentality, but the lines were randomly drawn on a sketchbook. The accidentality and the drawing-like images are manifest further in “On the Line” series free from any regularity. “On the Line” is reminiscent of those lines of incidental to rhythmic gymnasts’ manipulation of ribbons or Jackson Pollock’s action painting. The exhibition is on view through April 28, 2018, at Leeahn Gallery, 9, Jahamun-ro, 12-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea 03043.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/leeahn-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder Louise Blouin
